Maple Valley Farm on W Maple Grove Rd. in Bloomington, uses a non-GMO layer hen feed that we store in 50 lb. bags. A farmer we know grows and mixes our feed that includes non-GMO soybeans, corn and oats. We add organic kelp, sustainably harvested fish meal, minerals and vitamins. When fed to our pasture-raised hens, this feed produces deep orange yolks that stand up in the pan. Text Larry at (812) 327-4713 with your name if you have questions about the feed we use.
What’s special about our chicken feed?
What IS in it:
- Full fat, whole, ROASTED soy beans.
- Organic kelp meal with a full slate of trace minerals
- “National Organic Program” approved Fertrell mineral and vitamins.
- A small amount (about 3.5%) of sustainably harvested fishmeal to provide the critical amino acid methionine.
- Natural vitamin E as a preservative.
- Grains from a farmer we know. We know exactly where our feed is grown and who grows it.
What is NOT in it:
- Our feed has no genetically modified ingredients. NO GMO.
- NO ethoxyquin, a toxic pesticide commonly added to animal feeds as a preservative.
- NO soy trypsin inhibitors or other anti-nutrients. Roasting the whole bean eliminates phytotoxins in the skin of the bean while preserving the valuable nutrients and fats inside.
- NO soy oil. We use the whole fat bean so we don’t have to add highly processed soy oil back into the mix.
- NO traces of the hexane chemicals used to extract oil from the beans (beans are full-fat and contain all the natural oils.)
- NO pelletized or other highly processed feed ingredients. Chickens choose the food they need, when they need it.
