Has the resolute already slipped from your resolution? Do you feel yourself losing the determination you felt back on January 1? Are you starting to eat “just a little” of something you banned forever? Maybe instead of working out a new diet plan, it’s time for a change in thinking about diet. And instead of immediately moving to a gluten-free, sugar-free, fat-free, grapefruit-skin and avocado diet, take some steps to replenish your body naturally in a good way. Then you will be set to better examine what will work for your body and set your sights on a plan for life.
If you’re ready to re-set, here are some ways you can transition in a natural way your body will love.
Get some sun and fresh air. It’s easy to stay inside in the winter and avoid the cold. But sun is still critical to health. Just a few minutes in the fresh air can clear your mind and help you relax. Even winter sun provides warmth and Vitamin D. If you’re feeling irritable, down, or overworked, or you just need a break, step outside for 10 minutes. Forego the sun glasses and turn your face up to the sun. Let its warmth sink in while you breath in the fresh air. You’ll be amazed at your change of mood and outlook.
Refresh and re-set with broths and soups. Dig out some of those soup bones or stewing hens you’ve been holding onto and make some nourishing broths and stocks. And if you’re feeling under the weather or it’s an especially cold day, that is the best time for chicken feet stock. Real stocks will help to calm your digestive system and re-balance the gut flora, while infusing minerals and collagen. Use the stocks for simple soups or simply drink a cup or two each day. Here’s a simple chicken stock recipe. For a simple soup, we love to just add some thinly sliced carrots, potatoes, celery, and some shredded chicken.
Beat the cravings with good fats. Sugar cravings! Every time I allow myself to start eating more treats, I remember why I worked so hard to get away from them. It’s so hard to get away both mentally and physically. Good fats are the best cure for sugar cravings. This can come from animal fats like butter and milk or from coconut oil or coconut cream. Coconut cream on a banana or orange is a real treat!
Replenish with nutrient density. Chances are you’re feeling like slowing down the eating or maybe even fasting for a few days. Fasting can be helpful for some people, but I find it’s more helpful to eat less, but still make sure I’m putting in nutrient dense foods. So eat lighter, but focus on foods that pack the most nutrition, like greens, egg yolks from eggs raised on pasture, and organ meats from grass fed animals.
Don’t beat yourself up over the cravings and indulgences. Just dial it down and replenish your body with sun, fresh air, and nutrient density. Soon you’ll be ready to set more realistic February resolutions.
