Welcome!
We created this site to enable our current and future partners to determine and choose the types and amounts of meat they need for their household.
The site uses publicly available information that, when combined with information about your household, provides you with a conservative estimate of the amount of meat your household needs versus the amount selected, as well as the monthly and annual cost for your selected options. The information we use for this analysis is from public health and agriculture statistics and measures. (See optional info below for details)
FYI, Here’s how it works and the numbers we use:
- We assume servings are 4oz and we use low-end carcass weights to somewhat account for bones -- but estimates of need are still likely lower than actual
- Chickens per module: 12
- We assumed average weight of a broiler chicken: 3lb (x 16oz = 48 ounces)
- We assumed servings (4 ounces) per chicken: 12
- Beef per module: 1/8 beef at aprox. 45lb = 180 4oz servings
- Pork per module: ¼ pork at aprox. 37.5lb = 150 4oz servings
- Turkey per module: 18lb avg. x 4oz = 72oz
- Lamb per module: ¼ lamb at aprox. 8.75lb = 35 4oz servings
- 52 dozen eggs per module
- 78 grams of protein per dozen eggs (about 6.5 grams per egg)
- Seafood: 16 4oz servings per $60 order
- There are 28.3 grams per oz
- There are 4 calories per gram of protein (4 for gram of carb, 9 for gram of fat)
- 30% of meat on average is protein (the rest is water, fat and very little carbs)
- amount of calories required per day varies with age, sex and activity level
- We used a table from health.gov for required caloric intake per day that ranges from age <3 to >75 by year for sex and activity level of sedentary, moderate, active and athletic persons. These vary from 1000 calories/day for a <3 year old to 3400 cal/day for an athletic 19-21 year old male
- We used a protein needs table from health.gov that gives the % of caloric intake as protein required by activity level and weight loss goal (lose, maintain, gain). These range from 15% protein in diet for a sedentary person who wants to maintain weight to 25% protein for an athlete.
- Statistics from the USDA indicate that most Americans in the US eat only about 46% of their protein as meat
- We assumed the amount of protein eaten as meat varies by type of diet.
- Carnivore = 80% of protein in diet as meat (accounts for dairy)
- Paleo = 60% of protein in diet as meat
- Traditional = 52% of protein in diet as meat
- Mediterrainian = 45% of protein in diet as meat
- Low-Fat, High Carb = 46% of protein in diet as meat
- Standard American = 46% of protein in diet as meat
- Unknown = 46% of protein in diet as meat
- We apply an adminitrative discount that's shown as a percentage we take off of the administrative costs associated with your order (not off of the total order)
